From Spreadsheets to Spreading Compassion

For twenty years, my world was defined by the sharp logic of international investment banking. It was a world of spreadsheets, calculated risks, and financial acumen. Yet, amidst the rapid pace of global finance, a different kind of calculation began to weigh on me—one that couldn’t be balanced on a traditional ledger.

Coming from a vegetarian family, the concept of Ahimsa (non-violence) was already woven into the fabric of my personal life. But I began to see a disconnect between my personal values and the broader impact of the global systems I was a part of. I spent years in sustainable finance, observing how daily choices could drive systemic change, but I yearned to make that impact tangible, immediate, and personal.

I realized that if I wanted to make a difference in reducing suffering and living sustainably, food was the natural choice to work on. Because it is an activity performed by eight billion people, three times a day… Sadly, this activity is responsible for the loss of trillions of lives every year and the ongoing degradation of Mother Earth.

The “economic rationale” for leaving a stable banking career to open a café might have seemed thin to my former colleagues. Some might call it a midlife crisis; I call it a “delicious detour.”

This journey manifested in the creation of Pause Your Everyday Cafe, a space in Bandra, Mumbai, that is less about business and more about a philosophy of living. The café serves as a physical extension of my commitment to Ahimsa. By curating a strictly plant-based menu, I invite people to experience a lifestyle that is kind to animals and the planet while being delicious and fulfilling. I believe that letting people discover their own journey to live a more Ahimsak life is key, rather than forcing it on anyone. And everyone needs some time to process change for living more compassionately.

Been vegan for 8 years now, after being a non vegetarian all my life. Whenever I speak to people about turning vegan, they raise concerns about being ‘restricted’.
You, Rohit and the Pause Cafe team are shattering this myth every day!
Thanks a lot for making vegan food outstanding! Ever grateful.

One of the best Dining experiences ive ever had. The menu, the finesse, the taste, the curation, all par excellence. One one serious complaint. You people should have a much bigger and spaced out area. The food feels great. Both in terms of taste as well as a feel good factor. Kudos, guys . Ill keep coming back to this everyday addiction.

Took my parents to Pause and honestly forgot we were eating vegan. The food is that good. Nothing feels “substitute” or “compromised” and the variety is wild – finger foods, breads, mains, desserts, beverages, they’ve nailed everything. It never once felt like we were restricting ourselves. Just great food, full stop. A lovely spot I’d happily return to with anyone.

It was my silver anniversary made special by having an awesome evening at Pause cafe – it was a dream come true feeling for a vegan to be able to just not be figuring and requesting for something vegan in the menu – on the contrary I was spoilt for choices and wish I could order everything there – can’t express the feeling of freedom and relaxed mode in words! The place is a treat to alll our senses and the cheerful Christmas vibes just made everything “happy’. Would love to meet the souls who have made this happen and I congratulate you Rohit for creating this cute nook that invites positivity and bonding in people – just like us! Truly grateful, also to the lovely souls who recommended pause cafe – Sharanya & Jay!

Just visited Pause Cafe for a leisurely Sunday brunch . Nice , homely cafe with very nice staff , reasonable prices and amazing service. Food was great too . Avocado toast was beyond compare . Desserts were great too . We had the black forest cake and the hot chocolate ( Christmas special )
Highly recommend a visit to Pause cafe to all vegans and those who are curious about vegan food . Non vegans often think that vegan food is tasteless and uninspiring. One visit to this cafe and they will know how tasty vegan food can be .

This is such a beautiful and grounding story. ???? As a regular at Pause, it really resonates with me — I often come here to work, and the calm, intentional energy of the space makes it so easy to focus and feel centered. You can feel this philosophy in every detail, from the food to the atmosphere it creates. What I love most is how Ahimsa is translated from an abstract value into something tangible, welcoming, and delicious, without ever feeling preachy. Pause truly lives up to its name: it gives people space to slow down, reflect, and choose compassion in a way that feels natural and joyful. Thank you for creating a place that nourishes not just the body, but the conscience and the spirit too.
